Importance of Vaccinations

Vaccines help your puppy's immune system to protect and defend themselves from life-threatening diseases. Vaccines contain antigens that mimic the deadly organisms but do not cause disease. The is because the vaccine is to stimulate the immune system by recognizing the antigens present. If a dog becomes exposed to the real disease, the immune system will recognize it and be prepared to fight it off or reduce its effects.

A few vaccinations that are needed to be given to your puppies are:

When your pup is 6 weeks old, it’s necessary to get your pet immunised with an important vaccine called the Puppy DP, to protect against two potentially fatal viral diseases – Canine distemper and Parvovirus. This is a vaccination that is administered by a registered veterinarian that carries the pup’s details and is accompanied by the vet’s stamp and signature.

This vaccine needs to be bolstered in 3-4 weeks once maternal antibody levels have fallen. The booster covers the Adenovirus and Parainfluenza virus as well.

Puppies usually are protected by the antibodies passed on to them from their mother for about 6 – 8 weeks. So it is advisable to request the breeder to keep the puppy with their mother for 8 weeks to get the right nutrients they need for proper growth and health.

The rabies vaccine is given when the puppy is more than 12 weeks of age as or two dosed and boostered annually.

Finally, puppies are vaccinated for Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that is both endemic in many parts of India and zoonotic, spread by urine. This, along with rabies should be boostered annually for dogs in India.
