Whether your pet chooses to splash in puddles or watch the rain from inside the house, it's always best to be prepared for the monsoon. Like with humans, monsoon for pets bring a host of diseases, some of which prove life-threatening if not treated promptly. Hence, whilst you cuddle up in this weather, here are a few important things to keep in mind!
De-worm & vaccinate
Monsoon plays host to both air & water-borne parasites that commonly cause diseases such as kennel cough, tick fever, fungal skin infections, inflammation of the respiratory tract, poor appetite, vomiting, fever etc. However, a quarter of these diseases can easily be prevented through timely vaccination and de-worming right before the onset of monsoon. Consult your veterinarian/veterinary hospital to keep check on which & when vaccinations are due.
Fresh, boiled water only
Water, especially that which hasn't been boiled and left stagnant for hours on end are not only dangerous to pets but also their humans. Boiling water kills most disease-causing pathogens thereby making it safe to drink, but yes, no pet likes boiling hot water! Allow the water to cool before pouring it into your pets' bowls and keep changing the water every 3-4 hours (even if left un-drunk). It's also essential to keep your pet's bowl clean, i.e. free of saliva, debris, insects etc.
Increase fibre intake
For pets that refuse to exercise in the rain, fibre is an absolute essential! Why? Because no exercise equals poor digestion, and poor digestion leads to constipation, loss of appetite, weight gain/loss, stomach aches and so on. To avoid indigestion and its gnarly aftermath, include more fibre-rich food like sweet potatoes, pumpkin, apple, carrots, green beans, bananas, flaxseed, pumpkin seeds in their diet. Whilst these do keep indigestion at bay, ensure you don't overfeed as it may cause bloating, gas, cramping etc. Adhere to a low calorie diet to avoid unnecessary weight gain from decreased aerobic activity.
6. Wet wipes - Wet wipes are perfect for wiping off mud and dirt. They can be used anywhere on the body (except eyes) making them a versatile monsoon essential.
Check skin & ears for infection
Monsoon is a happy season for pests, fleas and ticks. They are often known to crawl in and take refuge in your dog's moist fur. Hence, it is essential to keep a check on your pet's coat through flea combing, ear cleaning, tick shampooing, and hair drying.
Set up a warm space
Even though you practice all the dos and don’ts by the book, the most important thing is to make them feel secure during a downpour if the thunder or flashes of lightning scare them. You can let him snuggle with you or stuff their bed with plush toys to help calm anxiety and feel warm.
Engage in indoor games
Keep your pet engaged and active indoors by playing games such as tug of war, treasure hunt with your pet’s favourite treats, using treat dispensing toys, hide and seek etc. These not just strengthen the bond between you and your pet but also improve mental stimulation and keep them engaged for hours.
Add immunity boosters to the diet
Immunity boosters may be last on our list but they're often the most important. Immunity boosters help to keep your pets' immune system up & running for when they may face a host of diseases that this season notoriously brings.
