Things to Know About Exercising Your Puppy

When will my pup be ready?
As a general guide, your puppy will be ready to go outdoors approximately 2 weeks after their final vaccinations, and they have been treated for fleas, ticks, and worms. The last vaccination is usually administered around 14-16 weeks of age. It's always best to check with your local vet about when it's okay to take your pup for walkies!

Do I need a leash?
A leash is always a good idea if you are taking your dog to large open spaces. This allows other people to identify your pup easily in case it does end up running about away from you. Puppies love to explore their new surroundings. However, if you are in an enclosed and safe area then give your pup some free time off the lead.

Hydration
Use yourself as a guide to determine when your pup might need water, and it's a good idea to carry a drink bottle for your puppy. If it's a hot day, be mindful that your pup may need water often to keep hydrated. Also remember, the floor may heat up and become unbearable for your pet and thereby damage your puppy's paw pads. Be careful on hot days.

Socialization
Walkies are a great way to let your puppy meet and greet other pets and humans. However, keep in mind that in the early days your puppy might not be ready for long walks. So it’s always best to start off with smaller walks and gradually introduce longer walks.

Play
Keep your puppy entertained with ball catchers and fetch toys. Mixing in playtime with exercising strengthens the bond between you and your puppy too!

Petsy thoughts: it’s not always about fetch

Ball games aren't for everyone. Some humans can't throw, and every breed is different. Take pugs, for example, they feel it's beyond them to be fetching things. They're way too cool for that. The real fun comes in playing a variety of games with your dog. Ever tried tug-of-war? Or blowing bubbles?
